Overview of the NAVenGIS Initiative

Concept Solutions, in partnership with NAV CANADA, has been awarded the 2024 ATCA Outstanding Achievement Award for Small Business. This recognition highlights their groundbreaking NAVenGIS initiative, which enhances military Air Traffic Management (ATM) and improves integration with the U.S. National Airspace System. The initiative has delivered automated capabilities, including ADS-B Accommodation and advanced Altitude Reservation (ALTRV) management, boosting situational awareness, safety, and efficiency. With international collaboration involving the FAA and the UK, this effort sets new benchmarks in aviation technology and operational excellence.

Testimonial from NAV CANADA

“This year, NAV CANADA worked directly with Concept Solutions to successfully deploy a new Altitude Reservation (ALTRV) management software capability, streamlining airspace management and enhancing operational efficiency. With this new feature, military units can now enter airspace requests directly into the system, reducing the potential for errors and significantly decreasing processing time. This capability will also integrate seamlessly with modern air traffic management systems, positioning NAV CANADA at the forefront of innovative airspace solutions and reinforcing our commitment to safety, efficiency, and service excellence across Canadian airspace.”

Key Achievements and Project Phases

In Phase 1 of the initiative, CS successfully delivered an automated ADS-B Accommodation capability, supporting NAV CANADA’s efforts to comply with the Canadian ADS-B Mandate for non-compliant flights in Class A airspace. This system, operational as of August 1, 2023, just three months post-contract, provides NAV CANADA’s military flight planners with enhanced situational awareness, allowing them to visualize flight routes and communicate critical information to air traffic controllers for unequipped aircraft.

In Phase 2, CS implemented an advanced Altitude Reservation (ALTRV) request management capability, transforming NAV CANADA’s internal communications and situational awareness for their Altitude Reservation Units. This new capability streamlines what was previously a manual, paper-based process into a centralized, digital system. Phase 2 went live on 30 October, introducing significant improvements in information sharing with international Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), including the FAA and the United Kingdom. These enhancements are designed to further boost safety and operational efficiency.

Setting New Standards in Aviation Innovation

Through this multi-phase initiative, CS and NAV CANADA are setting new standards for aviation technology and innovation, with more capabilities planned for future phases. This award underscores Concept Solutions’ dedication to elevating air traffic management and demonstrates the potential for advanced technology to enhance safety, efficiency, and international collaboration in aviation.

Concept Solutions, LLC is thrilled to announce a new contract with NAV CANADA. This collaboration will see the development of a two-phased software product. The first phase, already launched on August 1st and for a limited period, focuses on accommodating aircraft in Class A airspace that do not meet the Canadian ADS-B Mandate. This solution allows NAV CANADA to visualize and communicate to air traffic controllers information related to flight routes for un-equipped aircraft, which includes the available conventional radar coverage for each flight.

Mr. Bill Wright, CTO of Concept Solutions, LLC, commented, “This partnership with NAV CANADA exemplifies our commitment to innovative solutions and agile development. Leveraging the AvenGIS platform, we’re proud to efficiently deliver cutting-edge technology that addresses real-world challenges in the aviation sector.”
The upcoming second phase will enhance the system by introducing an Altitude Reservation (ALTRV) request management feature. This will streamline NAV CANADA’s internal processes and foster efficient interactions with international Air Navigation Service Providers, including the US’s FAA.

This innovative solution is built on Concept Solutions’ AvenGIS framework, a flexible GIS platform tailored for mission-oriented applications. The platform’s extensibility enabled the development of the application in mere weeks, a testament to AvenGIS’ capability and the efficiency of modern software development practices.
The partnership between NAV CANADA and Concept Solutions, LLC is set to run until July 2024, with potential extensions up to July 2029.
